LLDA CHIEF EXPRESSES SUPPORT FOR PAKIL PUMPED STORAGE PROJECT

PAKIL, LAGUNA — Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) General Manager Engr. Leopoldo Parumog has expressed the agency’s full support for the Pakil Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Power Project (Pakil PSP) following a site visit on October 23 to assess the project’s progress and development.

During the visit, Parumog received a briefing on the project and toured its upper basin, a key component of the pumped storage facility.

“I’m happy to know and witness what is going on here. Full support naman ang LLDA sa project na ito,” Parumog said, expressing his appreciation for the scale and potential of the development.

The Pakil PSP is being developed by Ahunan Power Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Prime Infra. Once operational, the facility is designed to provide an energy storage capacity of 14,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) and a generating capacity of 1,400 megawatts (MW).

The project will use pumped storage technology, which involves pumping water to an upper reservoir during periods of low electricity demand and releasing it to generate power when demand increases. This system is expected to help strengthen grid stability and support the integration of renewable energy into the country’s power system.

Recognized by the Philippine government as an Energy Project of National Significance, the Pakil PSP is positioned to contribute to the country’s long-term energy security and power system reliability.

Parumog also expressed admiration for the project’s engineering scale, noting that witnessing such a major infrastructure development was a remarkable experience.

“If I had been given the chance to work here as an engineer, I’d be happy to do that. Ngayon lang ako makaka-experience ng ganitong kalaking project,” he added.

Joining the LLDA chief during the visit were LLDA Enforcement Division Chief III Atty. Marian Soriano, Surveillance Monitoring Division Engineer IV Engr. Bernadette Valle, Ahunan Power Inc. President Noel Gonzales, and Prime Infra Foundation Operations and Programs Head Bernadette Tan.

Gonzales emphasized the importance of protecting the lake and working in harmony with the environment as the company advances the project.

“Prime Infra and Ahunan recognize the significance of the lake as vital to our Pakil Pumped Storage Project. As developer and operator of sustainable infrastructure projects, we capitalize on indigenous sources and work in harmony with nature to help build resilience and address urgent priorities facing many communities,” Gonzales said.

Beyond its energy infrastructure development, the project also supports community assistance initiatives. Following the site visit, Ahunan Power Inc. and Prime Infra Foundation turned over 100 packs of rice to LLDA for distribution to fisherfolk communities around Laguna Lake.

Gonzales said the companies share a common vision of promoting regional growth through infrastructure investments and community programs.

“We share the same vision and we’re happy to contribute to driving growth for the area through our project and community programs,” he said.

The visit highlighted the importance of coordination between government agencies and private-sector developers in advancing major energy projects while recognizing environmental concerns and the needs of communities surrounding Laguna Lake.
