CARD MRI Highlights AI, Digital Innovation in Building Resilient Microfinance Sector
CARD Mutually Reinforcing Institutions (CARD MRI) underscored the role of artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure, and human capital in strengthening the resilience of the Philippine microfinance sector during the Microfinance Council of the Philippines, Inc. (MCPI) Annual Conference held on August 12–13, 2026.
With the theme “From Recovery to Resilience: Shaping the Next Chapter of Philippine Microfinance,” CARD MRI Founder and Chairman Emeritus Dr. Jaime Aristotle B. Alip shared how technology can help microfinance institutions prepare for disruptions while ensuring continued access to financial services.
Alip highlighted CARD MRI’s efforts to strengthen its 3,866 offices nationwide, particularly in preparing for natural disasters, public health emergencies, and other crises that may disrupt operations and services.
He emphasized that building long-term resilience requires investments not only in technology but also in people. CARD MRI has strengthened its digital systems to support remote transactions while developing specialized positions, including AI Project Managers, to help maximize artificial intelligence in operations, risk management, and decision-making.
The organization is likewise investing in leadership development, equipping its next generation of leaders with skills in resilient governance and crisis management.
Beyond internal operations, CARD MRI has developed digital platforms aimed at making financial services more accessible to its more than 10 million clients nationwide.
Among these solutions is konek2CARD, a mobile banking application that enables users to manage their accounts, transfer money through InstaPay, and pay bills digitally. CARD Sulit Padala provides an affordable nationwide remittance network for cash transfers and direct account deposits.
For microentrepreneurs, CARD OttoKonek offers a digital platform where sari-sari store owners and other small business operators can order wholesale inventory, monitor sales, and accept cashless QR payments.
“Resilience is not just about surviving a crisis; it is about ‘shaping the next chapter’ of microfinance to drive sustainable growth for the Filipino people,” Alip said.
The conference also brought together key figures from the microfinance and financial sectors, including Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Assistant Governor Pia Bernadette Roman-Tayag, Kasanyangan Microfinance Foundation President and CEO Mercedes G. Faustino, Internal Auditor Jomar Dorado, and Rafael “Rapa” Cojuangco Lopa, among others.
The two-day gathering concluded with stakeholders emphasizing the need for a microfinance sector capable of adapting to emerging challenges while maintaining responsible and accessible financial services for Filipino communities.
As the industry moves toward greater digitalization, CARD MRI reaffirmed its commitment to using technology and innovation to strengthen communities and support sustainable growth for millions of Filipino families.
“As Philippine microfinance evolves, CARD MRI remains committed to using digital tools to empower communities and support sustainable growth for millions of Filipino families,” Alip said.
