Hernandez Pushes for Accountability as Cebu Grapples With Flood Aftermath
Calamba City District Representative CHA Hernandez is calling for a thorough congressional inquiry into the devastating floods that hit Cebu following the onslaught of Typhoon Tino.
In her resolution, Hernandez emphasized that disaster response must go beyond providing relief goods. She said an investigation is essential to determine whether negligence, corruption, or violations of environmental laws played a role in worsening the calamity.
โOur fellow Filipinos in Cebu deserve more than temporary assistance. They deserve justice,โ Hernandez said, urging government agencies to confront long-standing issues that contribute to environmental degradation and recurring disasters.
She also stressed the need for sustained vigilance and stronger national oversight on environmental concerns, warning that lives will continue to be at risk unless natural resources are protected.
โWe are committed to monitoring environmental issues not only in Calamba but nationwide, because protecting our environment is central to safeguarding our people,โ she added.
The proposed inquiry aims to strengthen transparency and accountability in environmental governance and ensure stricter enforcement of laws to prevent similar disasters in the future.
