Gov. Aragones Stands Firm on Class Suspension to Ensure Safety, Strengthen Earthquake Readiness
Laguna Governor Sol Aragones reaffirmed her decision to suspend face-to-face classes across the province until the end of October, emphasizing that the move was a proactive measure for public safety and disaster preparedness—not a directive from any national agency, including Phivolcs.
The governor clarified reports from an online media outlet claiming that Phivolcs had not advised the suspension, stating that she never sought such advice. Instead, her office requested data and assessments related to Laguna’s seismic situation.
Aragones explained that the decision was reached collectively during a meeting with officials from the Department of Education (DepEd), the Provincial Health Office, engineers, and disaster response agencies, with strong support from parents.
This initiative is part of a broader disaster preparedness effort, which includes province-wide inspections of school buildings and other public structures to ensure they can withstand potential earthquakes.
During an emergency meeting with municipal mayors on wednesday, local chief executives expressed full support for the suspension and the province’s readiness measures. Aragones maintained that the temporary halt in face-to-face classes will allow local governments, engineers, and DRRM officers to conduct thorough safety inspections and structural evaluations in every municipality.
“Tatayuan ko po hanggang dulo ang aking desisyon na dapat suspendehin ang klase face to face sa lalawigan ng Laguna,”she declared.
The provincial government has also organized a Crisis Management Team to oversee contingency planning, safety checks, and emergency response preparations.
Governor Aragones reiterated that the temporary suspension is a preventive action aimed at protecting lives. She also thanked media organizations that sought official statements to ensure accurate reporting and urged all media platforms to help curb misinformation.
The Office of the Governor remains open to dialogue regarding ongoing issues and concerns.
